Community engagement and communication

A four-hour workshop focusing on establishment of effective community relations through your council’s engagement and communication policies and processes. Topics covered include legislation and context, roles and responsibilities, balancing individual voice with the “council’s voice”, principles of engagement and consultation, and practical tips and applications. This workshop can be tailored for each council including familiarising attendees with existing council policies and practice and/or establishing the beginnings of a framework that will enhance council decision-making. The workshop includes case studies to demonstrate best practice.

Media relations

This five-hour interactive workshop is tailored to elected members and/or executives so they can more successfully use media channels – whether broadcast, print or social – to build relationships and successfully communicate their messages. The content includes policies, guidelines and protocols, the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act, delivering a consistent message, social media tips and traps, ‘crisis’ communication via the media, dealing with ‘tricky’ questions, and building effective media relationships. Attendees can also expect some real-life examples and activities to support the dos and don’ts of successful media communication.
